Hi, I'm Robin Sorel. I've been growing food on a 4-square-meter apartment balcony for six years — first in Chicago, now in a smaller unit where half of what I used to grow simply doesn't fit anymore. Most of what's on this site started as a problem I ran into myself: a self-watering planter that flooded in a rainstorm, a "compact" tomato that outgrew its pot by July, a grow light that looked identical to a better one at half the price and wasn't.

I'm not a horticulturist, and I say so when it's relevant — the guides here are built from hands-on trial and error on a real balcony plus digging into product specs and other growers' experience, not credentials. If something in an article turns out to be wrong or out of date, telling me at the address below gets it fixed.
